To begin, I must say that as I was skeptical about reading this title at first, I had decided to listen to the audiobook rather than a physical read. The narrator's voice was extremely soothing and matched the tone of the book very well.
Throughout the book, there was alot of references to Poldark (with being set in the county of Devon), which made me somewhat giggle, as I am quite the Ross Poldark fangirl.
Amongst these references of Poldark, were many (I repeat MANY references to Beowulf), which sadly got a tad annoying for me, but I suppose I can't penalise the author if she is a particular fan of Beowulf.
Some of my favourite snippets:
"Alright, Yoda!"
"We were everything we wanted to be, and everything we didn't"
So I'm excited to be writing my first review on Overbooked's first book!
Overall, I'd like to give 'The Salt Path' 4 out of 5 stars. I chose this book as I felt as though it seemed to be a heartwarming tale from a perspective I haven't really had any previous knowledge on. It definitely opened up my eyes to the beauty of human connection and the instability of our material possessions, no matter what age we are, as well as feeding me a lot of information about homelessness that I wasn't aware of.
However I do agree with Katie, the Beowulf references did get a bit much for me and sometimes I also found myself losing concentration due to repetition, which is why the book gets 4 stars instead of 5.
Sorry Emma! I tried so hard to love this book it has everything I love smashed into a book, walking, super heart warming, travelling etc. I just found it SO repetitive. This is so harsh but it wasn't emotionally engaging so I couldn't relate.
However, it is a fascinating true-story with beautifully written parts that will make you sad, happy and shed some tears. Even though I had no emotional connection with the characters the way the author has written some sections will really get to you.
I'm giving the Salt Path a 3.5 I found it so difficult to finish the chapters as they were so long, I do wish I had gotten the audiobook I maybe would of enjoyed it more! Sorry Emma!!!!!
